Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Tournament
2002 Big 12 Conference Baseball Team Notes - May 26, 2002
Big 12 Baseball Tournament Pairings
Top O' the Notes: National records for conference tournament attendance fell again from May 22-26 as 150,196 tickets were sold for the 2002 Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference baseball tournament. The first college tourney scheduled at a Major League Baseball facility-The Ballpark in Arlington-added to fans' interest in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex with a meet-high 13,961 draw for the May 22 Texas-Texas A&M Game 4. Nine of the 14 contests in the tournament sported ticket counts of 10,000-plus while all-meet ticket sales topped 7,000. Big 12 teams now await NCAA bids at 11:30 a.m. (CDT) on the NCAA Division I Baseball Selection Show, seen nationally on ESPN2. Texas A&M Director of Athletics Wally Groff, chair of the committee the last two years, will be featured on the program and a subsequent teleconference as the 16 sites for 2002 NCAA Regionals are designated. Thirty conferences, including the Big 12 represented by 48-14 Texas, earn automatic berths, and there are 34 at-large spots. Coach Augie Garrido's (2002 Big 12 Coach of the Year) Longhorns won both the Big 12 crown and the Phillips 66 tournament with a 5-1 record in the postseason joust. Big 12 '02 Pitcher of the Year Justin Simmons (14-1 overall) of UT helps the cause along with 2002 Freshman Player of the Year J.D. Reininger and '02 Freshman Pitcher of the Year Huston Street. Nebraska, led by 2002 Big 12 Player of the Year C-DH Jed Morris and '02 Newcomer of the Year Aaron Marsden (both of Nebraska) have high hopes for the selections. Last year five Big 12 schools received berths, and 25 teams from this league advanced to NCAA play from 1997-01. For more information log on to www.Big12Sports.com.
BAYLOR
Quality wins over Southern California (three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium), Oral Roberts (another three-game sweep), Texas A&M, and Oklahoma (among others) gave coach Steve Smith's Bears some fine moments in 2002. Junior All-America candidate Ross Bennett of Cape Girardeau, Mo., paces the team with a .357 batting average, five HR and 37 RBI.
KANSAS
Wins over Nebraska, Oklahoma and Big 12 champion Texas have offered encouragement for the Jayhawks as they prepare for summer amateur baseball. Soph infielder Ryan Baty of Wichita, Kan., led the '02 squad with a .341 average while junior 1B-P Kevin Wheeler of Omaha, Neb., paced the team in home runs with eight while batting .320 in all games.
KANSAS STATE
Coach Mike Clark's crew made major inroads with the school's first postseason wins since the 1995 Big Eight tourney. KSU downed Baylor and Texas Tech in the '02 Phillips 66 Big 12 tournament at The Ballpark in Arlington. KSU also rode the .398 hitting of junior OF Pat Maloney of Overland Park, Kan., to a 30-win season. Maloney also drove in 53 runs with 11 HR.
MISSOURI
MU had one of the best 1-2-3 hitting punches in the league in 2002 in DH-P Cody Ehlers (.361-9 HR-52 RBI) of Stillwater, Okla., OF Lee Laskowski (.349-6 HR-47 RBI) of St. Peters, Mo., and OF Jayce Tingler (.346-0 HR-34 RBI, 13 SB) of Smithville, Mo. Freshman RP Travis Wendte (3-3, 5 saves, 3.89 ERA) of Moore, Okla., also has a solid future on the hill.
NEBRASKA
NU's historic first battle with Texas in the 2002 Phillips 66 Big 12 baseball tournament was prolific. Nebraska was 14-0 in the tournament against teams from Oklahoma and Texas in the 1999-02 tournaments and ended a record 12-game winning streak in the process. Coach Dave Van Horn's forces are a combined 16-2 (.875) with three titles in the meet from 1999-01.
OKLAHOMA
Sooners' pitchers probably have not received the respect due to them in '02, but late-season performances have put any doubts at bay. Freshman David Purcey of Addison, Texas, has a sterling 2.93 ERA in 23 appearances, 5-4 record and six saves through games of May 30 while teammate Mark Roberts (7-3) of Owasso, Okla., picked up a triumph in the league tournament vs. Texas A&M.
OKLAHOMA STATE
The Cowboys have extended their streak of 23 consecutive seasons with 37 wins (and 21 years with 40 victories within that skein) after closing the 2002 regular campaign with a 37-19 mark. OSU's offense was one of the most balanced in recent memory as IF Zach Cates of Tempe, Ariz., and 1B Josh Fields of Stillwater, Okla., pushed the .400 mark most of 2002.
TEXAS
Junior OF Dustin Majewski of Brenham, Texas, batted .500 and drove in 10 runs along with four homers as the Longhorns won the 2002 Phillips 66 Big 12 tournament. Majewski also raised his season's average to .392-second in the loop-with nine home runs and 40 RBI for the 48-14 Longhorns. UT has captured its most wins (48) since a 51-16 mark in 1993.
TEXAS A&M
Coach Mark Johnson's Aggies upended top-seeded and fourth-ranked-nationally Texas 8-4 in Game 4 of the Phillips 66 Big 12 postseason meet behind one of the top showings of the season by soph lefthander Kyle Parcus of Rosebud, Texas. Parcus struck out 10 and did not walker a batter in delivering the clutch win in the opening round of the league joust.
TEXAS TECH
Tech's 16-game winning streak came to a halt one game after the team snapped the Big 12 record of 15 by Nebraska in 2001 and Kansas over the 2001 and '02 campaigns. Still, efforts by pitcher Steve Gooch (7-2, 3.84 ERA) of Waco, Texas, and Steve Rowe (8-2, eight saves, 1.35 ERA entering postseason) have lifted Tech toward its probable eighth consecutive NCAA bid.
